Plan for the day
Leaving Cambridge, we head immediately to the American War Memorial at Madingley near Cambridge. Here, you will learn about the strong American influence in the region and the horrors of World War II. Then we head north-east to the small, historic town of Ely with its magnificent cathedral and quaint riverside marina. Next we cross the border into Suffolk to the impressive, historic town of Bury St Edmunds where we visit the ruined abbey where the Magna Carta was drawn up nearly 800 years ago. Finally, on to view the crooked-beam houses of the old, medieval, once-wealthy, rural backwater of Lavenham before heading back to Cambridge in the early evening.
